When flamenco dancing came to Cuba from Spain and was welcomed by the Afro-Cubans as an event dance, not social dance– it took on the generalized name, rumba flamenca, in the guaguancó, the woman would certainly dance away from her companion, just as in Spain, although in Cuba the dancing was to the tempo of one or even more drums, featuring tumbadoras (called conga drums in North America as a result of the conga – the word, itself, the feminization of the African Congo – a dancing where a musician beating a tumbadora leads dancers in serpentine fashion trend around the dancing flooring). Today it’s just called rumba.
The Cuban rumba is really various compared to exactly what one would see in a ball room dancing competition. The dance is highly energetic and was believed to be obtained straight from the dance of African servants from around the West Indies and the Caribbean. Dancing historians day performance of this kind of rumba back as very early as the late 19th century. Several of the moves are so suggestive and honest, that the dance was often taken into consideration unwanted in the nations it was performed, and was prohibited.
The Cuban rumba calls for a higher level of athleticism, as it is very fast. The dancing stands for a temptation attempt on the component of the men, with the female standing resistant to the man’s appeals.
